Cast On
Project Name
This home is sited on a fragile sand dune and was therefore designed to sit lightly on the site, allowing sand wind and waves to flow easily under the main house. Our primary design intent was to allow not only the elements to flow under and between the two buildings, but to also create a porosity that would allow visual site lines through to the ocean when driving up to the building and upon entering either the guest house or main house on foot. A dramatic bridge between two buildings was finally agreed upon to create this experience.
Careful wood detailing throughout the design connect it to the surrounding context of New England Cottages, while complimentary steel detailing give it a clear place within contemporary design. Each material was used not as affectation, but in assemblies that warranted use.
The overall design is intended to age gracefully in the elements and within the currents of architectural taste in the region. Subtle rather than bold statements of form and material were favored throughout the process.
