Aura

Aura is the transformation of a 1960s-era nightclub into a rebranded, high-tech performance venue in the heart of downtown Portland.

Design Challenge: To expand and modernize an iconic entertainment venue on a tight urban footprint in a downtown historic district.

Design Solution: The 15,000 SF space was renovated and expanded to 24,000 SF by adding 2.5 stories to the main event space. In addition to doubling audience capacity, Aura’s design solution increased accessibility, improved the user experience, and created an attractive new downtown landmark.

Promoting the Right to Equal Access: Prior to Aura’s renovation and expansion, not all areas of the venue were accessible and ADA seating options were less than ideal. Aura is now completely accessible, starting with ground-level entrances. Inside, seating, counters, and restrooms are accessible at all building levels via a six-stop elevator.

Building Aesthetics: Located one block from Monument Square, Aura’s design grounds the building in the strong masonry elements found in the original and neighboring structures and contrasts it with a modern form comprised of distinctive siding, stone, and glass. Aura’s multi-story curtainwall creates an aperture into the main event space, with additional dazzle added through accent lights and color-changeable signage. A concept of “musical frequency meets architectural rhythm” spans all design aspects of the building, from the undulating windows to interior floor and lighting patterns, creating visual excitement and cohesion.

Designed for Performance: This $10-million project brings audiences state-of-the-art audio, lighting, and video technology — achieved with remarkably little sound emission, through carefully-designed acoustical wall construction, panels, and glazing. To improve the sightlines, the stage was raised four feet and a horseshoe-shaped balcony level was added. Performers benefit from new loading dock and lifts, VIP suite, and enhanced connection with the audience.

Sustainable Design: Aura’s reinvention increased energy efficiency significantly by improving the existing envelope and adding new HVAC systems. The building envelope exceeds the energy code insulation values and utilizes high-performance glazing. Other green design choices include LED lighting throughout, low VOC finishes, zoned heating, and automation of major building systems.

Additional Amenities: New spaces such as two multi-purpose pre-function areas, as well as renovations to the existing sports bar and dance club, make Aura a new downtown option for meetings and celebrations. Aura has hosted over 120 performances, galas, and charitable fundraising events since opening in April 2017.
