Goose Rocks Beach House

Goose Rocks Beach is surrounded by pine trees, dunes, and harbor seals.  The sandy beach and rolling waves provide a wonderful outlet for swimming, kayaking and a soothing sonic reminder of the ocean beyond.

Broad steps at the arrival continue to the beach with the house as a link between the land and the sea. The elevated structure provides unlimited access to stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and allows ample room for entertaining children, extended family and friends.

The Beach House is an ideal place to relax, enjoy the beach, and watch the light play off of the ocean. The house was constrained by the height limitations of the town and the FEMA flood plane of the beach. Working closely with a Civil Engineer, we created a code compliant path to maximize occupied space while keeping the building in line with its surroundings, and complimenting the neighborhood aesthetics.

The need to elevate the house gave us the opportunity to celebrate the structure using exposed galvanized steel. The steel structure ties the building to the ground with a light touch, while creating design opportunities through the house that include: the exterior stairs, interior structure, hand rails and guards, the water table, and porches.

The building minimizes energy consumption with day-lighting strategies, cross ventilation, a tight building envelope, PV solar panels, and air source heat pumps.

Expansive walls of glass embrace the view, and connect the occupants to the ocean beyond. The landscape flows under the steel structure, creating the illusion of the house floating above the landscape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor space.
