Stroudwater Lodge

Upon approaching The Lodge, the façade design is not overlooked. The nature-inspired colors, timber framing, stone and thoughtful design emanates warmth to create an inviting feeling. Once inside, that same feeling continues throughout with the intimate and relaxed interior.

The Lodge is a full-service assisted and independent senior living community where independence is treasured and is situated on a gorgeous, quiet, Maine-wooded campus. The beautiful outdoor setting helped lead the design of a Maine lodge structure and interior that blends beautifully with the natural environment. The community offers a variety of private studios, one- and two-bedroom apartment styles with beautifully detailed kitchens, many with patios and private balconies overlooking the tranquil maples and Maine birches. The innovative design and independent philosophy shines through from the outdoor patio to the private dining area to the relaxing sunroom. Completed in 2016, the 90,848 square foot community offers a fun eat-in tavern, dining room, gourmet teaching kitchen, a comfortable theater, a salon for pampering, a brain gym for mental fitness, as well as an exercise gym for keeping seniors active, along with beautiful paths surrounding the lodge for walking and enjoying the great outdoors. With the construction cost of $21,317,993, the community is nothing short of a wonderful self-sufficient home where the residents’ needs are met within the campus, and only moments away from their apartment.

The site contained difficult easements, property lines, grade changes, and existing road and site requirements, leaving us with a challenging envelope to design to suit the programming needs. The access drive needed to be located directly across from the owner’s existing memory care home to create a campus feel.  Travel distances within the building for senior residents is extremely important to consider during the concept phase to ensure that each resident can access all that the building has to offer with ease. Overcoming all of these challenges only enriched the building layout and site.

By studying all of the special internal and external relationships through diagrams early on, it led us to design the main entrance in the central core on the southeast side and then intermix apartment types to develop and bend the wings on each side using elevators to minimize walking distances between common spaces and apartments. The building volume was also studied early on to address how such a large building could be nestled into the tree-line with varying forms, roof lines and architectural detailing.
