Long Residence
Project Name
The site is in a new subdivision with covenants requiring “traditional” exterior appearance. The design distills New England building typology while accommodating the contemporary lifestyle and energy performance requirements of a retired couple. Simplicity and clarity are the guiding principles.
Organized as two volumes with similar proportion and details, an entry hall links the gable structures together without compromising the gable forms. An exterior deck is partially screened to provide privacy and control solar exposure. The space above the garage which is used for exercise equipment can become another bedroom suite.
The building position on the site is guided by solar orientation to maximize photovoltaic panel efficiency, which will be installed in the future. The building envelope includes R40 walls and R60 roof structure with high efficiency electric heat pumps for heating and cooling. Ventilation is an air to air heat exchanger.
