Patriot Insurance Company

Patriot Insurance Company moved into their new 34,000 sf corporate headquarters late in 2017. The development was the first large project to be reviewed under Character Based Development Code in Yarmouth. These guidelines dictated many of the general design elements like traditional architecture, building placement on site, and even forced restrictions on undulation of the building.

Designed to relate to Yarmouth’s historic mill building along the Royal River, the two-story brick building has carefully detailed traditional elements such as precast concrete base, window sills and heads, well-proportioned fascia and entablature, and historically proportioned dormers to help break up the large roof. The large conference room doubles as a community room which is symbolized by the large windows and garden-like trim at the street level.

The newness of the town design guidelines created unforeseen challenges throughout the design process. The building was required to be within a certain distance from the street, but at almost 300’ long and a slight curve to the road, the design team had to balance a maximum setback off the road alongside front entry elements and the desire to break up the plane of the façade.

A combination of private offices and large cubicle areas make up the large wings for Patriot. But the large conference room that can handle the entire staff, as well as welcoming community space during off-hours, is the center of the design.

There is additional leasable office space which create a flexible and income-generating building for Patriot Insurance Company. The design challenge for the floor plans was to create the potential for multiple tenants with the ability to access and egress their space, while at the same time plan for future expansion for Patriot Insurance to occupy these spaces yet still remain easily accessible to the main office.

The design of building reflects Patriot Insurance’s vision of an historic and long-standing commitment to the community of Yarmouth and a symbol of its heritage.
