Juror Biographies

Tom Kundig, FAIA, Lead Juror
Olson Kundig Architects, Seattle

Tom Kundig received the 2008 National Design Award in Architecture Design, awarded by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. He has won eight National AIA Honor Awards, numerous other AIA awards, and is a recipient of a 2007 Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which recognizes architects whose work is characterized by a strong personal direction. In 2004, Kundig was selected as one of eight North American Emerging Architects by the Architectural League of New York and was elected to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects. He was a finalist for the 2005 National Design Award for Architecture, and was a recipient of a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. Architectural Record has named two of Kundig’s projects Record Houses—the Rolling Huts in 2008 and Delta Shelter in 2006. The firm received the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award.

James Cutler, FAIA
Cutler Anderson Architects

James Cutler received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and earned a second Master of Architecture from the Louis I. Kahn Studio Program. He has served as a critic and design instructor at the Universities of Pennsylvania, Washington and California at Berkeley, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, the Universities of Oregon and Oklahoma, and as Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth College. His firm has won six National AIA Honor Awards and numerous other regional and state awards.

Annie Han
Lead Pencil Studio

Annie Han received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon. Together with partner Daniel Mihalyo, the firm has an extensive portfolio of work which blurs distinctions between architecture and art. Their work is consistently experiential in its sense of space and materiality, and each project is site specific and rich in its explorations. Han has taught architecture and drawing at the University of Washington and lectured at the University of British Columbia and Suyama Space in Seattle. Their work is widely published.

Jim Dow
Schuchart/Dow

Jim Dow is a managing partner in the construction firm of Schuchart/Dow, which specializes in custom residential work. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and earned teaching credentials from Pacific Lutheran University. He has been involved in the construction field since he was a teenager, and has fostered a deep interest in the relationship between designer, client and builder. The firm’s philosophy is based on a rigorous, interactive process from inception to completion. He has worked with many of the premiere architectural firms in the Pacific Northwest on a range of residential projects.
